While reading and thinking, say it aloud. It helps the brain make your knowledge more real.   [guest]

We learn one simple idea at a time. This is also the best way to communicate.   kellyjones00 (593)

Vocabulary:
  • Read, read, read. This is the best way to increase your vocabulary. Most words are learned from the context they appear in, so try to figure out the meaning of new words from their context.
  • Use your new words. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary.
  • Make up as many associations and connections as possible. And say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory. Relate the word to words you already know.
  • Get in the habit of looking up words you don't know. If you have a dictionary program on your computer, keep it open and handy.
  • Use mnemonics ( memory tricks). Create little stories or pictures to help you remember difficult words.

Language methods: For a long time I thought vocabulary was an important part of language acquisition, until I discovered the Langenscheidt German-English translation method. This method from the early 1900s goes far beyond the simple concept of words that mean certain things. Vocabulary is deemphasised very heavily in that method, to the point where it can come out unfettered.

The method encourages a holistic approach - as well as a molecularisation of language. A piece of writing might say very little, or a great amount. The words must be perfectly spelt, but it is the writer's personality that is of utmost importance. If the belief is there, the goal is already reached. This method inspires confidence in writers, and is greatly enjoyable, which is why the company is still around today 150+ years since it started in 1856.   myxlfidian (150)

Respect the goal, and it's more likely you'll follow-through.   [guest]
